Highwood completes ‘breathtaking’ care and housing project in Alton
Highwood has handed over one of its most prestigious community projects to date following the completion of a new luxury care home with age-restricted apartments and the stunning new public Alton Gateway space that now serves as a magnificent entrance to the market town of Alton in Hampshire.
The project to complete the 67-bed care home and 28 affordable apartments was another collaboration with Octopus Real Estate’s flagship Octopus Health Fund and leading UK care provider, Hartford Care. The Selbourne Roadscheme is the final piece of a comprehensive proposal that included the Borovere Farm site, a new highways’ reconfiguration, railway bridge, the Lord Mayor Treloar site and a £5m contribution to the town’s new sports centre.
Highwood’s ambitious proposals for the gateway site captured the imagination of Alton Town Council and local residents who engaged with the team throughout an extensive public consultation process. The planning application was to answer the call for an ever-present demand for age-related accommodation and consent followed a year later.
The popular scheme also called on the creativity of designers who were invited to submit proposals for the public gateway layout during the public consultation process. Deacon Design’s scheme with its breathtaking wildflower, lighting and seating arrangement was voted winner and the new landscape, which includes a new connection to the Writer’s Way, is now complete.
