A new 68-bed care home built during one of the most challenging periods in our history

Highwood has completed its prestigious 68-bed care home project on the vast Botleigh Grange site on the outskirts of Hedge End Village, near Southampton. Following a successful tender, Highwood was appointed principal contractor for the project that was designed by W R Dunn Architects for Frontier Estates, a leading UK healthcare sector development partner.

The project was successfully delivered in line with Frontier’s timeframe, despite construction being undertaken during the Covid pandemic. Today, Snowdrop Place Care Home is operated by leading care partner, Barchester Healthcare, in this, their first new-build development.

Completed during the most challenging period in our history

The high-end 68-bed care home incorporates a brick and timber clad façade with large terraces on the first floor and two accommodation wings either side. It was designed to provide an array of specialist care services for the elderly that exceed current Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements. Facilities include of a multitude of residential day spaces such as a café, hair salon, lounges, dining rooms, a private dining room and a cinema.

Despite the constraints of working on site throughout lockdown with difficult safety measures and working restrictions to navigate, the project remained on course thanks to the efforts of all teams involved in the build.

Certified ‘Excellent’

During the project, Highwood was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Considerate Constructors Scheme in recognition of the project team’s on-site compliance and consistently high build and operational standards.

The A1-star rating was also achieved by the project team at Highwood’s 60-bed Extra Care scheme at Westergate in West Sussex just weeks before.

Snowdrop Place Care Home was handed over to Barchester Healthcare early in 2021, welcoming its first residents shortly afterwards.
