The ‘Help Inside the Hard Hat’ tour bus has visited two Highwood sites to deliver its message about mental health in the construction industry. The campaign is run by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity to raise awareness and encourage openness about poor mental health within our sector.
Highwood takes mental health very seriously and, by raising awareness in our workplace and sharing information about the help that’s available, we can play our part to help construction workers feel more able to talk and share the load.
We were very happy to have welcome the Lighthouse team to our Ampfield Retirement Village and Adanac Park care home and neuro unit sites and listen to men’s mental health advocate, Andy Bishop of ManGang and the Lighthouse Charity, talk to the site teams. The response from everyone present was overwhelmingly positive – as Terry Oliver, Health and Safety Manager at Highwood confirms:
“Meeting up with Andy Bishop again on our sites is always a wonderful experience and today was no exception,” he said. “His passionate and emotive delivery of the subject of men’s mental health strikes a chord with all present and is always poignant due to the challenges we encounter on a daily basis.
“The ‘Help Inside the Hard Hat’ tour visited our Adanac Park and Ampfield Meadows projects, where the powerful message about removing the stigma attached to men’s mental health and the fact that it’s okay to talk about it was delivered emphatically. The talks are presented in such a way that Andy involves everyone in the discussion and, in that moment, they become invested in the message he’s giving. I believe that Andy and the Hard Hat tours are critical to raising the profile of men’s mental health and, in doing so, they are vital to our industry.”
The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity has delivered emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to the construction community since 1956 and is the only charity of its type.
Its ‘Help Inside the Hard Hat’ initiative provides fantastic pro-active support and resources that include a free app and mental health training.
