AN 80-BED CARE HOME WITH FOUR EXTRA CARE APARTMENTS FOR SPECIALIST CARE PARTNER, HAMBERLEY DEVELOPMENT

Highwood has delivered a new 80-bed, high-end care home with four extra care apartments on the site of the former landmark Eastleigh Police Station building close to the Hampshire town’s centre.

Alston House was built for specialist care operator and established development partner, Hamberley Development.

Retaining the integrity of the original building

Key to the success of design for the new care home was RDT Architects commitment to retain the integrity of the original police station, which was built in 1024 and listed. Today, in its place, stands a prestigious four-storey care home that will serve elderly and demential patients for generations to come.

Specifically designed for elderly and dementia patients, the four-storey building features 80 en-suite bedrooms with exceptional communal living areas, dining rooms and quiet spaces along with four extra care apartments. Additional facilities include a cinema room, gymnasium, dedicated activity areas, a hair salon, boutique café and wine bar. A private dining room for residents to enjoy intimate social occasions with family and friends also forms part of this superbly appointed scheme.

Delivered on time despite Covid

Our project to redevelop the former Eastleigh Police Station site was underway when the Covid pandemic struck that led to far-reaching site restrictions from the first national lockdown onwards.

Yet, thanks to the planning skills of the project team and a collaborative approach with all construction and supply chain partners, safe and compliant working practices were introduced and ensured our delivery commitment for the project was met.

Hamberley went on to open its doors and welcome its first residents in 2023 – you can read more about life at Alston House here.
