Test Valley Southern Area Planning Committee has unanimously passed plans submitted by Highwood for the Old Mansion residential scheme at our landmark North Stoneham Park community project in Eastleigh.
The newly approved plans, which were praised by planners and members for their design quality, represent the culmination of a seven-year promotion by the Highwood team. The scheme comprises a prestigious collection of 63 new homes, including three and four-bedroom houses and one and two-bedroom apartments, including 12 affordable apartments. All will be set on a 26-acre site within the stunning grounds of the old North Stoneham House mansion site that dates back to at least 1638 and was once home to the dynastic Fleming family.
The Old Mansion development was inspired by the early 20th century homes designed by British architect, Herbert Collins, which are well regarded in the local area. It sits to the south of North Stoneham Park and east of Stoneham Golf Club and, when complete, it will be approached by an impressive private road leading to a parkland setting rich with landscaped open spaces, mown paths and walkways.
The new homes will be set around a village green with a pond and arranged as The Mansion Apartments, The Courtyard, The Square, Woodland View and Lakeside View. Its close proximity to the tranquil fishing ponds, notably the historic Park Pond that once served the old mansion, and splendid trees referred to in the Domesday Book highlight the sensitive nature of the site that Highwood has worked so hard to preserve, as Jon Bray, Planning Manager at Highwood, revealed.
‘We were particularly proud that members of the planning committee praised the design of this scheme,’ he explained. ‘As with the entire North Stoneham Park community, sustainable, well-designed development that will enhance its heritage assets is at the heart of our plans. Our commitment to the local green infrastructure will include the conservation of all historic elements, substantial tree planting and the creation of a series of clearings, public open spaces and play areas.
‘Of equal importance is the provision of high quality, character homes and plans that will help meet local housing needs. This is yet another successful piece in the North Stoneham Park jigsaw and we’re very much looking forward to beginning construction in the coming months.’
The scheme had already achieved critical success earlier this year when it was recognised by national planning awards judges with a shortlisting for HGP Architects in the Award for Best Housing Scheme (Fewer than 500 Homes) at the Planning Awards 2020.
