Case Study: The Barns, Romsey

We moved into our new privately owned office development, The Hay Barn, in January 2011, following a meticulous design process to create a bespoke, commercial working environment with a contemporary feel, yet which worked with the existing fabric of the historic barns and to the satisfaction of Test Valley Borough Council.

Today, The Hay Barn is a remarkable headquarters building for Highwood and sits next to The Cart Barn, The Cattle Barn and The Stables, further barns which have been completely restored to an impeccable standard and incorporate the latest, most energy efficient environmental systems. These three further barns are now occupied by other private businesses.

The opportunity to purchase the former farm buildings was almost missed when The Barns was originally marketed. We expressed an interest, but opted not to proceed at that time. Some six months later, whilst driving past the site, a director noted the buildings had failed to sell and were to be auctioned that day; a diversion to the auction room followed and the site secured!

Perfectly located for a commercial office development next to the M27 and M271 road network, The Barns represented Highwood’s first barn conversion. Such was the interest from passing traffic as the build progressed that we were soon asked to convert other farm buildings in the area.
